2015 Wine of the Year Awards

The 2015 Throsby Creek Oenological Phalanx Wine of the Year Awards were held at the beautiful Old Vic Inn in Canowindra, in central NSW. The awards celebrate the best wines tasted from July 2014 to June 2015.

Through-out the year there were many great wines consumed - from the very expensive to absolute bargins.  Interesting the most expensive wine received the lowest mark and one of the in-expensive wines won the coverted Wine of the Year.

The White, Red and Sparkling Wines of the Year go to the highest rated wine as judged by the members during each monthly tasting session. The wines are tasted 'blind' so the marks are based upon what we think of the wine, un-encumbered by price, variety or winemaker. The mark allocated to each wine is the average mark after removing the highest and lowest score given.

The Wine of the Year then uses this mark and that gets an additional mark-up based on it's price. An in-expensive wine will receive a higher markup than a very expensive wine leaving our Wine of the Year as a good value, great wine.

The Awards are then given to the winning host! We also usually let the winemakers know.

So after all the marks were tallied by the Baxter-Barwell team of Larissa, Miller, Lee-Anne and Michael, here are the winners.

and (drum-roll please) ...

It was very tight at the top. All top three wines scored 9.2 and only their price separating them ...

The 2015 Throsby Creek Oenological Phalanx Wine of the Year goes to ...

Lavender Ridge Semillon (8.2)
"Smooth, slightly oaky" "Punchy. Flavour and smells great" "Lucious" "Well rounded, good fruit" More>>
Lavender Ridge Semillon $4.20

At $4.20 (albeit a bargain bin-end buy) the Lavendar Ridge was going to be very difficult to beat.

It was followed (only by the price) by All Saints Rutherglen Tokay (9.2) and then the Moorooduc Estate Shiraz (9.2)

The hosts Sean and Peter received the trophy and a special engraved glass was sent to Richard and Jill at Moorooduc Estate who were tickled pink.
